Cheap Leeds Bradford Airport Parking » Airport Information>History History of Leeds Bradford AirportYeadon Aerodrome was the name of the airport before it became Leeds Bradford. It was the site of flying clubs and flight lessons until the beginning of World War II. In 1935 there were a few scheduled flights from Yeadon Aerodrome to Newcastle, Blackpool, Edinburgh and the Isle of Man. West Coast Air Services and Northeastern Airlines were using the extended runway.
Although there were plans in 1936 to build a 40,000 pound terminal, it was not completed. One wing was finished, only to be destroyed later by a new building project.
Isle of Man Air Services began seasonal holiday flights to Liverpool and the Isle of Man in 1936. However, all civil services ended with the beginning of the war. Air Ministry requisitioned the airport which served as the venue for the maiden flights of aircraft which were manufactured next door to the airport.
After the war ended, civil flights resumed. Yeadon Aviation Ltd was formed in 1953 to operate the airport and to sponsor the Yeadon Aero Club. Leeds Bradford Airport Joint Committee took over the running of the airport in 1959, and many improvements quickly followed.
In 1976, Thompson Holidays brought new traffic to the airport when they began promoting package holidays to Spain. This added to the already growing traffic for the airport.
Following extensive airport improvements in 1982, the airport had its first transatlantic flight, a flight to Toronto.
HRH the Duchess of Kent opened the first phase of the terminal extension in 1985, just before the first visit to Leeds Bradford Airport of Air France’s Concorde.
The airport became a limited company in 1987. There have been so many changes in such a short amount of time for this airport. By 1997 the airport terminal doubled in size with improvements in the departure hall and arrival hall as well as two new air bridges.
Becoming the home of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance also increased the value and prestige of Leeds Bradford Airport.
